Winter Navigation Skills

Who It's Aimed At

The winter environment can be more challenging and therefore a greater need for efficient and safe navigation is required. This course is for you if you know how to use an axe and crampons but just need the skills and confidence to navigate in winter. You’ll get more out of the course if you have used a map and compass before in summer.

Bolt on option

Courses are typically two days, with the option of a bolt on day at the beginning if you haven’t got much previous navigation experience.

What We'll Cover

We will focus on the specifics of navigation and strategies, rather than bagging summits. In winter, much of the summer features are covered, therefore, ground interpretation and contour recognition become essential. We’ll give you the time to practice these skills and focus on strategies to help in white-out conditions. By the end of the course you’ll have the confidence to bag those summits, even if the weather prevents you from having the views!
