Hampta Pass
A crossover from green to barren
The trek
A dramatic single-pass crossing from the green Kullu valley into the rain-shadow desert of Lahaul.
Hampta Pass is the most vivid geography lesson in the Himalaya. You begin in the soft, pine-and-pasture Kullu valley, where streams braid through grazing meadows and the air smells of wet deodar, and within the span of one pass crossing you tip over into the arid, moonlike emptiness of Lahaul. The transition is so sudden it feels almost staged — one side green and dripping, the other side bare rock and dust under a hard blue sky.
For such a short trek it carries an outsized sense of adventure. The route threads the narrowing Hampta gorge, fords glacier-fed streams, and climbs a steep, often snow-filled couloir to the notch of the pass itself before plunging down talus and scree into the Spiti-bound country below. An optional extension drives you out to the cobalt sheet of Chandratal, the 'moon lake', cupped in the high desert.
The compact length makes Hampta Pass a favourite for trekkers who are short on days but unwilling to compromise on drama. It asks for steady fitness rather than prior high-altitude experience, and it delivers a true valley-to-valley crossover that bigger, longer treks struggle to match.

Day by day
The itinerary
5 days from Jobra. Tap any day to read the detail — distances and altitudes are planning figures and may shift with conditions.
The day opens with a switchbacking drive up the Hamta road to the Jobra road head, a series of tight hairpins climbing out of the Kullu valley. From here the walk is short and forgiving, easing in through stands of silver birch and maple alongside the chattering Rani nala. You emerge onto the open grassy bowl of Chika, ringed by pine and laced with snowmelt streams, a gentle introduction that lets the body begin adjusting to altitude.
