Kang Yatse II
A 6,000-metre summit above the Markha
The trek
A non-technical 6,000-metre trekking peak rising above the Markha valley and the Nimaling plains — within reach of fit trekkers ready for crampons and rope.
Kang Yatse II is the gentler of the two summits on the Kang Yatse massif, and one of the most accessible 6,000-metre peaks in the Indian Himalaya. From the broad green plains of Nimaling it lifts in a clean snow-and-ice cone to just over 6,250 m, towering above the Markha valley and the trekkers who pass beneath it. The higher main summit, Kang Yatse I, is a committing mountaineering objective; this one is a 'trekking peak' — non-technical in good conditions, but very much a high climb.
The expedition follows the classic Markha valley approach for acclimatisation, then establishes a base and high camp on the mountain. Summit day starts in the dark, on crampons and roped together, working steadily up moderate snow slopes to a corniced summit ridge. There is no rock climbing and no steep ice, but the altitude is unrelenting, the cold is real, and the final slopes demand patience and a methodical pace.
No prior mountaineering experience is essential, but excellent fitness, prior high-altitude trekking and a willingness to learn basic glacier skills are. For trekkers dreaming of their first true summit above 6,000 m, Kang Yatse II is the obvious, honest place to start.

The itinerary
9 days from Leh. Tap any day to read the detail — distances and altitudes are planning figures and may shift with conditions.
Fly into Leh to begin acclimatising for the climb ahead. At over 11,000 ft the first day is for rest and steady hydration, with no exertion at all. The thin, dry desert air takes time to adjust to, and careful early acclimatisation is the foundation of any 6,000-metre attempt. The day is spent quietly settling in.
