Annapurna Base Camp
Into the glacial amphitheatre
The trek
A teahouse trek into the Annapurna Sanctuary, a glacial amphitheatre ringed by 7000–8000 m peaks.
The Annapurna Base Camp trek aims for one of the most extraordinary natural arenas in the Himalaya: the Annapurna Sanctuary, a high glacial basin almost entirely encircled by giants. Stand at base camp and you are surrounded — a near-complete ring of 7000- and 8000-metre peaks, from the great bulk of Annapurna I to the perfect fish-tail spire of Machapuchare, rising on every side like the walls of a roofless cathedral.
The walk in is a journey through ecological zones. From the rice terraces and Gurung villages above Pokhara, the trail climbs through subtropical jungle and bamboo, into dripping rhododendron forest, and finally up the narrow Modi Khola gorge into the alpine sanctuary itself. It is a teahouse trek throughout, so the nights are warm and the meals hot, but the days are long and the relentless stone staircases make it a properly demanding route.
We run it in spring, when the rhododendrons set the forest ablaze, and in autumn, when the post-monsoon air is at its clearest. The grade is difficult more for stamina than altitude — there are no high passes to cross, just a great deal of up and down — and the reward, that 360-degree sunrise from within the sanctuary, is worth every step.
