Island Peak (Imja Tse)
A Khumbu climbing peak with a Base Camp warm-up
The trek
Nepal's most popular climbing peak — a 6,189-metre summit reached on rope and crampons, approached through the Everest valley and often paired with Base Camp.
Imja Tse — known to everyone as Island Peak — earned its name from Eric Shipton, who saw it sitting like an island in a sea of ice. At 6,189 metres it is the classic next step beyond a Base Camp trek: a genuine mountaineering objective with a headwall, fixed ropes and a corniced summit ridge, yet within reach of a fit trekker with the right guiding.
We approach through the heart of the Khumbu, acclimatising on the trail toward Everest Base Camp, then move to Island Peak base camp for the summit bid. There is real climbing here — jumaring fixed lines, crampons on the glacier — and the reward is a 360-degree summit view of Lhotse, Makalu and the Imja valley far below.
