Bali Pass
A high crossover from Har-ki-Dun to Yamunotri
The trek
A serious crossover trek over a steep 16,000 ft pass, linking the Har-ki-Dun valley to the shrine at Yamunotri beneath Bandarpunch and Swargarohini.
Bali Pass is one of Garhwal's most committing crossover treks — a high, demanding traverse that links the green cradle of the Har-ki-Dun valley to the sacred springs of Yamunotri, with a steep 16,000 ft col in between. It is a route with a real sense of expedition: remote, strenuous, and only for trekkers who have earned their altitude on hard treks before.
The approach follows the Supin river past the ancient villages of Osla and Seema and into the lake basin of Ruinsara Tal, with the great walls of Swargarohini and Bandarpunch closing in on every side. From the high camp at Odari the route turns up toward the pass, and the summit day is unrelenting — a long, exposed climb to the col on snow and scree, often roped, followed by an immense, knee-punishing descent toward Yamunotri.
Few treks reward the effort so completely. The crossing places you among some of the finest peaks in Garhwal, threads two utterly different valleys together, and finishes at a Char Dham shrine that pilgrims have walked to for centuries. With its steepness, length and altitude, Bali Pass is a serious mountaineering trek that demands full fitness, prior high-altitude experience and respect.
