Valley of Flowers
A UNESCO meadow in full bloom
The trek
A monsoon-fed national park where hundreds of alpine species flower at once, paired with the Sikh shrine at Hemkund.
For a handful of weeks each monsoon, a hanging valley in the Bhyundar gorge erupts into colour. Orchids, blue poppies, primulas, anemones and potentilla layer themselves across the slopes in drifts, the palette shifting week by week and almost hour by hour as different species take their turn. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and walking into it feels less like trekking than like stepping inside a living, breathing painting.
We pair the valley with Hemkund Sahib, the glittering glacial lake and Sikh gurudwara cradled at 14,400 ft, so the route balances soft, flower-filled valley days against one genuinely demanding climb. The contrast is the point — the gentle, fragrant meander through the blooms one day, the thin-air pilgrimage to a sacred high lake the next.
The trails are lush and waterfall-laced, fed by the same rain that paints the meadows. This is soft-adventure trekking at its most rewarding: comfortable guesthouse nights in Ghangaria, modest daily distances, and scenery that asks nothing of you except that you don't mind a little Himalayan rain. It is ideal for families and first-time Himalayan walkers.

Day by day
The itinerary
6 days from Govindghat. Tap any day to read the detail — distances and altitudes are planning figures and may shift with conditions.
A long day on the pilgrim road up the Alaknanda valley, following the river through the sacred confluences of Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag where the great tributaries meet. The route climbs past Joshimath before dropping to Govindghat at around 6,000 ft, the roadhead set at the confluence of the Alaknanda and the Lakshman Ganga. You overnight here among the steady flow of pilgrims bound for Badrinath and Hemkund. It is a full, winding day in the vehicle on the busy Char Dham highway, so an early start helps you reach the roadhead before nightfall.
