Brahmatal
Ridgeline views of Trishul in winter
The trek
A winter ridge trek to a high frozen lake with arguably the best close-up views of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti.
Brahmatal has quietly become the connoisseur's winter trek. Where Kedarkantha gives you a summit, Brahmatal gives you a ridge — a long, exposed, sky-high traverse with two of Garhwal's most arresting peaks, the trident of Trishul and the clean cone of Nanda Ghunti, filling the horizon directly ahead. Few low-commitment treks put you face to face with such big mountains for so long.
The trail threads up through rhododendron and oak forest, past a pair of legend-soaked lakes — Bekaltal and Brahmatal itself, named for the god Brahma, who is said to have meditated on its shore. Both freeze solid in the depths of winter, mirrors of ice set in the snow, and the camps beside them are some of the most atmospheric in the region.
Summit day is the ridge: a steady climb to the high point with the entire Garhwal skyline unrolling on either side. The snow is reliable from late December through March, and the grade stays forgiving enough for fit first-timers, making this a rare trek that pairs beginner-friendly walking with truly world-class mountain views.

The itinerary
6 days from Lohajung. Tap any day to read the detail — distances and altitudes are planning figures and may shift with conditions.
A full day on the road climbing northwest from the foothills through Bhowali, Almora and Kausani, where clear mornings reveal a long wall of Nanda Devi-range peaks. The route then descends to the Pindar river and follows it upstream before climbing the final stretch to Lohajung, the small pass-side village that serves as the trailhead. You overnight here in a guesthouse, already well placed for acclimatisation at around 7,600 ft. It is a long winding transfer, so an early departure helps you settle in before dark.
