The trek
One of Himachal's hardest and most remote treks, crossing the Kalihani and Thamsar passes to the isolated shepherd village of Bara Bhangal, from Manali to Bir.
Bara Bhangal is one of the hardest and most storied treks in Himachal — a long, committing traverse from the Kullu valley to the Kangra valley that crosses two high passes, the Kalihani (4,800 m) and the Thamsar (4,875 m), to reach the utterly isolated shepherd village of Bara Bhangal, cut off from roads on every side. It is a serious wilderness route for experienced trekkers, following the paths of the Gaddi shepherds who have moved their flocks across these passes for generations.
The trek links glacier crossings, remote meadow camps and two demanding pass days with a long walk out to Bir via Billing. Its length, altitude and isolation demand fitness, prior high-altitude experience and a settled weather window in June or the post-monsoon of September and October. The reward is some of the wildest, least-visited country in the Western Himalaya.
