Black Peak (Kalanag)
The highest peak of the Saraswati (Bandarpunch) range
The trek
A classic Garhwal mountaineering expedition to the 6,387 m summit of Black Peak (Kalanag), approached through the Ruinsara valley from Sankri.
Black Peak, known locally as Kalanag for the cobra-hood shape of its summit, is the highest point of the Saraswati (Bandarpunch) massif in the Garhwal Himalaya at 6,387 m. The expedition approaches through one of Uttarakhand's loveliest valleys — from the trekking hub of Sankri over the Ruinsara valley to a base camp on the Kyarkoti meadows — before turning to snow, ice and the glaciated summit ridge. It is a genuine mountaineering objective that rewards experienced trekkers stepping up to their first technical 6,000 m peak.
The climb combines a beautiful multi-day trek approach with a committing summit phase of load ferries, fixed ropes and glacier travel. Prior high-altitude trekking experience and comfort with crampons, ice-axe and roped movement are essential; the itinerary builds in acclimatisation and reserve days to maximise the summit window. Best attempted in the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons when the snow is stable.
