The trek

A demanding non-technical summit trek above the Kuari ridge, with a long boulder-and-snow push toward 15,000 ft.

Pangarchulla is what the gentle Kuari Pass trail becomes when you keep climbing. Sharing the same beautiful approach through oak forest and high clearing, it then turns upward and onward to a true summit at over 15,000 ft — a peak that looks straight into the ring of giants guarding the Nanda Devi sanctuary, with Dronagiri, Kamet, Hathi-Ghoda and Nanda Devi itself crowding the skyline.

The summit day is the heart of it, and it is hard. Starting in the dark, trekkers move for hours over a long, lung-burning slope of boulders and old snow, the route-finding tricky and the air thin. Crampons, an ice axe and a steady head are part of the day in the snow season, and the final ridge is a genuine test of stamina and resolve.

This is a trek for those who have summited before and want to step up — fit, acclimatised walkers ready for a demanding push and a real sense of mountaineering, all without technical climbing. The reward at the top is one of the finest summit panoramas in Garhwal, earned the honest way.
