Dayara Bugyal
A vast rolling meadow in every season
The trek
One of India's largest and most beautiful high meadows — gentle, sweeping and lovely in both winter snow and summer green.
Dayara Bugyal is, quite simply, one of the great high meadows of the Himalaya — a vast, rolling tableland of grass that unfurls for kilometres beneath the snow peaks of the upper Bhagirathi valley. 'Bugyal' is the Garhwali word for these alpine pastures, and few are as wide, as gentle or as photogenic as this one.
The trail climbs from the old wooden village of Raithal through dense oak and rhododendron forest before breaking out onto the open meadow, where the gradient eases almost to nothing and the views simply expand. Bandarpunch, the Gangotri peaks and the Black Peak stand along the skyline, and herders bring their flocks up to graze the summer grass.
What makes Dayara special is its split personality across the seasons. In winter it becomes a vast, untracked snowfield, gentle enough that beginners can learn to walk in snow safely; in late spring and early summer it turns an electric green, dotted with wildflowers. Short, easy and forgiving, it is an ideal first trek and a serene escape for everyone else.
