The trek

The shorter Sikkim trek to Dzongri Top, where a single dawn delivers the Kanchenjunga panorama without the full Goechala commitment.

Dzongri is Goechala's compact sibling — the first and most spectacular half of the famous Kanchenjunga route, packaged into a trek that fit walkers can finish in under a week. It follows the same storied trail out of Yuksom, climbing through Sachen and the Tshoka rhododendron forest, but turns for home at Dzongri Top instead of pressing on to the high pass.

What you give up in distance you keep in views. The dawn climb to Dzongri Top reveals the same crowded skyline of Sikkim's giants — Kanchenjunga, Pandim, Kabru and a dozen lesser spires — lit pink and gold above the cloud sea. For trekkers without the time or acclimatisation for the full eleven-day route, this is the sanctuary's grandeur on a manageable scale.

The grade is honest moderate: steep forest climbs and one high, cold camp, but no technical ground. Spring drapes the Tshoka section in rhododendron blossom; autumn trades the flowers for crystalline skies and the sharpest mountain light of the year.
