Har Ki Dun
The valley of the gods
The trek
A cradle-shaped valley below Swargarohini, walked through ancient villages that still keep their old timber traditions.
Har Ki Dun is a trek through living history as much as through landscape. The trail follows the Supin river past some of the oldest continuously inhabited villages in the Himalaya — Osla, Gangad, Seema — where the carved-timber houses, the local deities, and the rhythms of buckwheat and amaranth farming have changed remarkably little across the centuries. Walking through them, you have the sense of moving through a way of life rather than past it.
The valley itself is a near-perfect glacial cradle, a wide green hollow scooped out beneath the twin ice spires of Swargarohini — the 'ascent to heaven' that the Pandavas of the Mahabharata are said to have climbed at the end of their lives. Marinda Tal and the upper meadows reward those who push deeper, with the great peaks standing over everything.
It is a long trek but a gentle one, gaining height gradually along the river through pine, walnut and terraced field. Crucially, it is beautiful across three distinct seasons — spring blossom, summer green, autumn gold — which makes it one of the most flexible classic routes in Garhwal and a favourite for those who want immersion over altitude.

The itinerary

A scenic day on the road climbing out of the Doon valley and up the Tons river through Mussoorie, Nainbagh, Purola and Mori. The route winds through apple orchards, pine forest and terraced farmland, gaining height through a string of mountain towns to reach Sankri at around 6,400 ft, the timber-and-slate trailhead village at the edge of the Govind sanctuary. You overnight here in a guesthouse with views of the surrounding ridges and the first distant snow peaks. It is a long but beautiful transfer, best started early to arrive in good light.
