Kiager Ri
Ladakh's coldest 6,100 m climb by Tso Moriri
The trek
A high, cold 6,100 m expedition above the frozen lakes of the Changthang plateau near Tso Moriri, on snow and bitter wind from Korzok.
Kiager Ri is a 6,100 m peak tucked behind the frozen turquoise lake of Tso Kiagar on the Changthang plateau near Tso Moriri, one of the coldest and most unforgiving corners of Ladakh. Approached from the lakeside village of Korzok, it is a high, remote expedition rewarded with a 360° panorama of the plateau and its shimmering high-altitude lakes.
The route is straightforward but demanding — snow, bitter wind and thin air on a long summit day — and the extreme cold of the Changthang makes acclimatisation and preparation essential. Good acclimatisation in Leh and around Tso Moriri beforehand is vital; best attempted in the summer months, or as a hard-core winter climb.
