The trek

The demanding Kinner Kailash parikrama through Kinnaur, crossing the 5,242 m Charang La beneath the sacred Shivling rock, from Thangi to Chitkul.

The Kinner Kailash parikrama is a demanding and deeply sacred circuit around the Kinner Kailash massif in Kinnaur, home to the 79-foot natural rock Shivling revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. The route climbs from the Sutlej valley village of Thangi through Charang and the high meadow of Lalanti to cross the 5,242 m Charang La, the highest point of the trek, before descending to the famous last village of Chitkul in the Baspa valley.

It is a tough, high trek with a long, snowy pass day and real altitude, best walked from July to September once the Charang La is clear of heavy snow. Along the way the trail passes apple orchards, old Kinnauri villages, the Charang monastery and the sacred Shivling viewpoint, blending pilgrimage and high-mountain wilderness in equal measure.

  • The sacred Kinner Kailash Shivling rock tower
