The trek

The highest permitted trekking peak in Nepal — a glaciated but non-technical 6476 m summit with a five-8000ers panorama.

Mera Peak is the introduction to Himalayan mountaineering that thousands of trekkers dream of: at 6476 m it is the highest of Nepal's permitted trekking peaks, yet the route to the summit demands no rock climbing and no roped pitches — only glacier travel, crampons, an ice axe, and a deep reserve of stamina. It is the natural next step for a fit trekker ready to stand on a true Himalayan summit.

The approach is half the adventure. Rather than the crowded Everest trail, the route crosses the forested Hinku valley, a wild and little-travelled region of cloud forest, high yak pastures and almost no other trekkers, before emerging onto the Mera glacier. From the high camp, a long pre-dawn start on the glacier leads to one of the great summit panoramas on Earth: five of the world's six highest mountains — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu and Kanchenjunga — visible at once across the eastern Himalaya.

This is an expedition, not a teahouse stroll. It is graded challenging for its sustained altitude, its glaciated terrain, and the seriousness of summit day. We build in unhurried acclimatisation, run it only in the settled spring and autumn windows, and equip and brief every member for glacier travel before the climb. Prior high-altitude trekking experience is essential.

The itinerary

16 days from Lukla. Tap any day to read the detail — distances and altitudes are planning figures and may shift with conditions.

The expedition begins with the spectacular flight to the Lukla airstrip, then turns away from the busy Everest highway almost at once. A short climb leads east through rhododendron and pine forest to the small clearing of Chutanga, beneath the ridge of the Zatrwa La. The quiet trail signals that this is a wilder, less-travelled route.
