The trek

A serious 7,000 m mountaineering expedition to Mt. Kun, climbed from Shafat Nala in the Suru valley — a demanding introduction to technical high-altitude climbing.

Mt. Kun, at 7,077 m, is the slightly lower twin of Nun in the Nun-Kun massif of the Suru valley. Climbed from Shafat Nala, it is a serious technical expedition and a classic proving ground for climbers making the shift from 6,000 m peaks to true 7,000 m mountaineering. The route crosses glaciers and steep snow to a series of high camps before the long summit push.

Like its neighbour, Kun is a Leh-to-Leh expedition with acclimatisation in Leh, the drive into the Suru valley, a trek to base camp and a long, weather-dependent climbing phase with generous reserve days. It is meant for experienced climbers comfortable with crampons, ice-axe, fixed ropes and multi-day life at high altitude.

Highlights

  • A 7,077 m summit in the Nun-Kun massif
  • A technical, multi-camp expedition on glacier and steep snow
  • The remote Suru valley approach via Shafat Nala
  • A strong stepping stone from 6,000 m peaks to 7,000 m climbing
