Pin Bhaba Pass
Green Kinnaur to desert Spiti in two days
The trek
A vivid crossover from the green forests of Kinnaur to the cold desert of Spiti, with the contrast arriving in just two days.
Pin Bhaba Pass is the crossover trek distilled to its purest form. Where longer routes spread their transition over a week, Pin Bhaba delivers the full shock of it in barely two days: you climb out of the green, waterfall-streaked Bhaba valley in Kinnaur, top a snowbound pass at over 16,000 ft, and descend straight into the dust-brown, treeless expanse of the Pin valley in Spiti.
The approach from Kafnu is one of the loveliest in the western Himalaya — a procession of flower meadows, glacial streams and grassy campsites like Mulling and Kara, with the Bhaba river for constant company. The pass day is the hinge of the whole trek, a steep snow climb to the notch followed by a long descent that delivers you, almost disorientingly fast, into a different climate and a different culture.
It is a moderate-to-difficult trek that suits walkers with one or two Himalayan routes already behind them. Shorter and less committing than its big neighbour Pin Parvati, it offers much of the same drama — the same green-to-desert magic — in a tighter, more accessible package.
