UT Kangri
A beginner-friendly 6,000 m peak in Changthang
The trek
An accessible 6,070 m expedition peak above Rumtse in Ladakh, on gentle snow slopes through the nomadic Changthang plateau — a fine first 6,000er.
UT Kangri is a 6,070 m peak on the vast Changthang plateau of Ladakh, reached from the nomad village of Rumtse on the Leh-Manali highway. Its gentle, mostly non-technical snow slopes and short approach make it one of the friendliest genuine 6,000 m summits in the Indian Himalaya — an ideal first expedition for fit high-altitude trekkers looking to step up to a peak.
The climb crosses ochre valleys and nomadic grazing grounds to a base camp around 5,100 m, then a summit camp, before a straightforward but demanding snow-slope summit day. Good acclimatisation in Leh beforehand is essential; the peak is best climbed in the stable summer months of June to September.
