The trek
A striking 6,303 m expedition peak rising straight above the fossil village of Langza in Spiti, on moraine, glacier and snow from Kaza.
Chau Chau Kang Nilda, at 6,303 m, is the striking guardian peak that rises straight above the fossil-hunting village of Langza in Spiti, some 13 km northeast of Kaza. First climbed in 1939, it is one of the most beautiful and accessible expedition peaks of the Spiti valley, combining the surreal high-desert landscape of Langza with a genuine climb on moraine, glacier and snow.
The expedition acclimatises through the high Spiti villages before establishing a base camp above Langza and climbing to a summit camp for the push. It demands roped glacier travel and comfort on steep snow, so prior high-altitude experience is needed. Best attempted in the stable summer months of June to September.

Reach the Spiti district town of Kaza at around 3,800 m after a long mountain drive, and settle in to begin acclimatising.
