Friendship Peak
An entry-level 5,000 m summit above Solang
The trek
An accessible Pir Panjal mountaineering peak above Solang — rope, crampons and ice-axe for a first true 5,000 m summit.
Friendship Peak is where many Indian trekkers make the jump to mountaineering. Rising above the Solang valley in the Pir Panjal, it is a genuine snow-and-ice summit at 17,353 ft that nonetheless stays within reach of a fit, motivated first-timer. There is no long approach march into remote country — you start from Solang and Dhundi, just up the road from Manali — and yet the climbing is unmistakably the real thing.
The expedition builds deliberately. From base camp at Bakarthach the team moves up to an advance camp on the glacier, spending time on rope work, crampon technique, self-arrest and roped-team movement before the summit bid. The final push is a long, cold pre-dawn climb up snow slopes and a corniced summit ridge, with the whole Pir Panjal and the Beas valley unfolding below as the sun comes up.
Because it teaches as it climbs, Friendship Peak is one of the best first 5,000 m objectives in the country. It demands ice-axe, crampons and a rope — and the discipline to use them well — but it asks for no prior summit on your record. Many climbers who go on to bigger Himalayan peaks point back to this mountain as the place they learned how.
