The trek

A non-technical trekking peak above the village of Kibber, with a summit panorama that sweeps from the Spiti valley to the peaks of Ladakh.

Kanamo stands at 5,964 metres directly above Kibber, one of the highest inhabited villages in the world, in the cold desert of Spiti. Like Yunam it asks for fitness and acclimatisation rather than technical skill — the route is a long walk-up on scree and snow — which makes it one of the best introductions to Himalayan climbing in the country.

What sets Kanamo apart is the setting. You acclimatise among the whitewashed monasteries and barley fields of Spiti, and from the summit the view opens across the Parang La toward Ladakh, the Pin valley, and a horizon stacked with six-thousanders. It is a short, sharp, beautiful expedition.

Highlights

  • A non-technical 5,964 m summit above Kibber
  • Acclimatisation among Spiti's high-desert monasteries and villages
  • A summit panorama stretching to Ladakh and the Pin valley
  • An ideal stepping-stone to bigger peaks

The itinerary

8 days from Kibber. Tap any day to read the detail — distances and altitudes are planning figures and may shift with conditions.

The expedition gathers at Kaza, the administrative headquarters of Spiti, set beside the Spiti river at the heart of the cold desert. The day is given to settling in and beginning the slow work of acclimatisation at over 12,000 ft, where most arrivals feel the thin air at once. A short, easy stroll through the town and up to its monastery helps the body start adjusting without overexertion. The setting is pure high desert — ochre hillsides, whitewashed houses and barley terraces under an enormous sky. Resting and hydrating well today pays off in the harder days ahead.
