Gokyo Lakes & Gokyo Ri
Turquoise lakes under the Everest skyline
The trek
A quieter alternative to Base Camp — a string of impossibly blue glacial lakes beneath the Ngozumpa glacier, crowned by the Everest panorama from Gokyo Ri.
Gokyo is the Khumbu's other great trek. Instead of following the crowds to Base Camp, it climbs a parallel valley to a chain of six glacial lakes — among the highest freshwater lakes in the world — strung along the edge of the Ngozumpa, Nepal's longest glacier.
The high point is Gokyo Ri, a 5,357-metre viewpoint that many trekkers rate above Kala Patthar: from the top, four eight-thousanders — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu — line up across the horizon while the lakes glow turquoise far below. It is high and demanding, but quieter and gentler underfoot than the Base Camp trail.
