Shinkun East
A 6,081 m peak by the Shinku La to Zanskar
The trek
A compact technical expedition to the 6,081 m Shinkun East, an outlier above the Shinku La on the Lahaul-Zanskar border, from Chuminakpo.
Shinkun East is a 6,081 m peak rising just west of the Shinku La, the pass that links the Lahaul valley to Zanskar. Approached from the Manali-Leh road near Jispa, it is a compact but genuine mountaineering expedition on snow and ice, with a base camp at Chuminakpo and a short, sharp climbing phase to a summit overlooking the Zanskar ranges.
Its modest length makes it an efficient 6,000 m objective, but the climb still demands glacier travel, fixed ropes and comfort on steep snow. Acclimatisation on the drive in and a reserve day for the summit window are built into the short itinerary. Best climbed in the summer season of July to September.
